- An Analysis of the Significant Decline in Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2008 (DOT-HS-811-346), In 2008 there were 37,261 people killed in motor vehicle crashes, the lowest number since 1961. With a further large drop in fatalities projected for 2009, this would mean motor vehicle traffic crash fatalities will have reached a level not seen since the early 1950s. The purpose of this report is to examine the current decline in fatalities, not just in relation to recent trends, but also in relation to any long-term changes that may be occurring.
- The Effectiveness of ABS in Heavy Truck Tractors and Trailers (DOT-HS-811-339), This NCSA technical report analyzes crash data from seven States and estimates that ABS on the tractor unit reduces police-reported crashes involving air-braked tractor-trailers by a statistically significant 3 percent.
- Closing the Data Quality Assurance Gap in the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) is NHTSA'S census of motor vehicle crash fatalities in the U.S. and territories. This paper seeks to explain the implementation of the re-coding process, in which previously entered cases were sampled and re-coded by select, experienced FARS analysts to check the accuracy and performance of the original analysts. The goal of the re-coding process is to enhance the quality control process to maintain accurate, complete, and timely FARS data.
- Seat Belt Use in 2009 – Use Rates in the States & Territories (DOT-HS-811-324), In 2009, seat belt use in the United States ranged from 67.6 percent in Wyoming to 98.0 percent in Michigan. This NCSA Crash*Stat shows that the nationwide seat belt use was 84 percent in 2009 as measured by NHTSA’s National Occupant Protection Use Survey (NOPUS).
- Sampling and Estimation Methodologies of CDS (DOT-HS-811-327), This NCSA Technical Report describes the sampling and estimation methodologies of CDS as they are followed in the operational program. This report is divided into two main parts, the first part describes the method of sampling which is used in CDS. Afterwards, the second part describes the method of estimation. The origins of the Crashworthiness Data system can be traced to the National Accident Sampling System which was implemented for operational use in 1979.
